nawww…. they really don’t.

It’s just the best excuse (for now) for their refusal to submit to Christ’s Lordship.

After the DaVinci Code fad sets and the next big ‘CHRISTIANITY MUST NOT BE TRUE BECAUSE BLAH BLAH BLAH’ comes up, you’ll see more professed Christians that really weren’t ‘fall away’ (1 John 2:19). Don’t be shaken, fam.

remember – in the 90’s, it was the Jesus Seminar and the search for the historical Jesus,

in the 80’s it was the battle for the inspiration and innerrancy of the scriptures,

in the 70’s it was exestentialism and experience over fact as truth,

in the 60’s it was universalism as a philosophy – love everyone,

in the 50’s, it was liberal theology and scholarship putting an anti-supernatural bias against the scriptures,

in the 40’s it was moralism and people esteeming themselves more than they should, thinking they don’t need God

in the 30’s, it was ruthlessness with every man looking out for himself during the depression

in the 20’s, it was egalitarianism

in the teens, it was the fundamentalist controversy

in the 1900’s, it was the Wellhausen JEPD theory, attempting to undermine the historical reliability of the OT

in the 1890’s, it was the history of religions school which tried to say Christianity borrowed from other religious movements

in the 1880’s, it was anti-creedalism where folks wanted to simply ‘love everyone’ (John 13:34-35) and ignore sound doctrine

in the 1870’s, it was an abandonment of historic orthodoxy for the beginnings of liberal theology

in the 1860’s, it was orthodoxy vs the unitarians

and so on and so forth.

“On this ROCK, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall NOT prevail against it.”

Let the infidels come. Let the goats bray. Let those who delight in unrighteousness and do not have a love for the truth rattle on. Their day is coming when our Lord shall appear from heaven and destroy them with the presence of His glory at His appearing. He will repay those who did not love the truth and continued to reject the gospel.

And on that day, the whole church will say AMEN.

Now before some of you get your speedos in a bunch, yes, we are to be concerned about:
A. The truth being proclaimed
B. The gospel represented correctly
C. The folk who are going to be deceived into thinking that DaVinci is truth.

On Letter A:
We’ve got a host of scholars who’ve already written books, booklets, and much more on the DaVinci Code.

D.James Kennedy’s DaVinci Delusion special just aired on national TV this past weekend (I missed it).

The DaVinci Challenge website’s been up for over a year or so now, with a whole bunch of articles already debunking the book.

Even my old running partner J.P. Holding did an article at the time the book came out and showed all of its’ historical blunderings, non-facts and so forth. That article, with a host of links and resources to other issues related to the book and movie are located here.

I highly suggest that you invest the time and read through, as J.P. has been very thorough on this one.

On letter B:

The ‘issue’ with Jesus being married is simple: if it’s true, then the historical accounts we have of Jesus in the NT are false. The usual ‘Did God Say’ approach from the garden. The Jesus of faith and the Jesus of history are either One in the same, or we’re believing fairy tales. We aren’t saved by believing in made-up stories or sincerity in something untrue.

On letter C:

Aside from J.P.’s mega-article above and related links, and/or the multitude of books out on The DaVinci Code, how about you take time, learn church history and arm yourself ahead of time so that you won’t be deceived AND you can give an answer to those who ask a reason for the hope that lies within you ? Stop being a reactionary Christian and do your homework early. And pastors – stop isolating yourselves to 20th and 21st century Christianity.

As I note in the post above, there’s 19 centuries of stuff that went on BEFORE your non-denominational fellowship came into existence. Those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat its’ mistakes. You’ll note in the historical overview above that some of the SAME problems keep resurfacing…. in fact, some exist NOW.

Heresies: Heresy and Orthodoxy in the Church by Harold O.J. Brown

Church History in Plain English (2nd Ed.) by Bruce Shelley.

Get them.

Read them.

And you’ll realize why folk like R.C. Sproul say don’t even waste your time looking like you’re giving Dan Brown any credence of being even REMOTELY credible by your going into a frenzy over an attack on the faith.
