I also just ran across this quote. Speaking of the nature of Puritan hope, S.R. Gardiner writes: “Like the other Puritans, Sibbes is distinguished by his triumphant confidence in the issue of his activity. Herbert’s melody, in its happiest tones, has alwasy something sad and plaintive about it. Even Laud and Wentworth acknowledged to themselves, that the chances were against them. Eliot in his prison, Sibbes in his pulpit, ar jubliant with exultation.” (emphasis added; cited by Iain Murray, The Puritan Hope, p. 92).
Once again Piper strikes the notes of a latter day Puritan (in the very best sense!).
